Superheroes Number 33 - Stuart Carr

Stuart earned a reputation as a dependable defender with Albion in the first half of the 1970’s. He was signed up from Whitburn Juniors in 1970 after impressive displays as a trialist in the Albion reserve side. He had also been on trial with Motherwell, but despite appearing several times for them, he was never signed.

Stuart was a virtual ever-present in the Albion No.6 jersey from seasons 1970/71 until midway through season 1976/77. He appeared under managers Frank Joyner, Bob Shankly, Frank Beattie and then Alex Smith. In 1971/72 and 1972/73 Albion came agonisingly close to promotion to the old First Division, but to many defeats in the closing stages thwarted their attempts.

Consequently, Stuart never played at the highest level, although his silky skills at the back indicated that he had the ability to do so.

In 1977 he lost his place in the team to Allan Moffat and he was unable to win it back. He was released and went back to his original side – Whitburn Juniors. However, Meadowbank Thistle gave him a second chance at the senior level in 1978 where he continued to shine at the back.
