Superheroes Number 31 - Ian Spence

Over the years Albion have been fortunate to be served by many goalscorers who boasted superb scoring rate during their time at the club. One such player was Ian Spence, picked up from West Lothian Junior side Armadale Thistle in January 1957.

Spence had two spells with the club – he joined Raith Rovers in October 1959, but came back to Annfield in December 1960. He spent a further year and a half with Albion before being released and signing for Stenhousemuir.

Ian was top scorer as Albion won promotion in 1957/58, with 20 league goals. He continued to impress in Division One and was selected as “travelling reserve” for the Scottish league when they met the Irish League at Ibrox. Ian combined the ability to put the ball in the net with tremendous ball skills, and a number of clubs were keen to take him.

On his return to Annfield in 1960/61 Ian became club captain. His move to Stenhousemuir was followed by a spell as Player Manager of Berwick Rangers.

In the early 70’s Ian was a scout for Albion in the Edinburgh area, and he also coached top junior side Linlithgow Rose.
