Superheroes Number 28 - Jose McKeown

Born in Bannockburn on April 9th 1924, Joseph McKeown was a real Albion legend in the early days. An out and out winger, he played on the left flank in the very first match played by Stirling Albion against Airdrie in August 1945. He had been signed up from Rutherglen Glencairn and was a key figure in the Albion’s rise to fame in the late 1940’s.

Small, quick and with an eye goal, he was idolised by the thousands who packed the Annfield terraces at the time. Jose helped the club in the Eastern League in 1945/46, finishing as top scorer. Those games were not considered as full senior appearances, but he went on to play 76 times for Albion in the C, B and A Divisions before being transferred to Hartlepool United in April 1950. In that time he scored 10 vital goals for Albion.

Jose returned to Scotland with Ayr United, and actually rejoined Albion for a short spell in 1953/54. By this time he was operating as a full back, having made the switch back that so many wing players have done.

Originally with well-known local side Vale of Bannock, Jose fully deserves to be included amongst the Albion superheroes.
