Superheroes Number 25 - Bill Taylor

Bill Taylor was one of the finest goalkeepers that the Albion Have ever signed. Bill came originally from Dumfriesshire, and played junior football with Cumnock. He joined St Johnstone in 1958 after an outstanding display as a trialist – against Stirling Albion.

He played in a total of 230 games for St Johnstone before moving to Albion in 1964. His ability was rewarded with selection as a reserve for the Scottish League against the Football League in 1961.

Bill was first choice goalie for Albion in 1964/65 as we won the Second Division Championship, and again in 1965/66 when we finished comfortably clear of relegation from the top flight. However, the signing of Willie Murray in 1966 meant that he was second choice in 1966/67, and he asked for a free transfer towards the end of the season. He joined Partick, and then Luton Town.

Bill was a really popular player in the 1964/65 promotion winning season when Albion set all sorts of records for the old Second Division. He was agile and confident and seemed to exude authority to those around him.
He is fully worthy of inclusion as a “Superhero” although his total of appearances for the club stands at only 79.
