Superheroes Number 21 - Keith Walker

In the last Superhero we featured Alex Smith – today we concentrate on one of his best signings for the club. When Keith Walker was signed from ICI Juveniles in the summer of 1984, few people knew much about him. However, he was an instant success in the first team, scoring twice on his home debut against Stenhousemuir in the League Cup, and going to make 42 first team appearances in his first season with the club.

Walker was a tremendous midfield player, combining physical strength and good skill and athleticism. His shooting power could trouble the best goal-keeper. His qualities were epitomised by a brilliant goal to win a 3-2 in injury time against Dunfermline at East End Park in February 1986.

Smith took Walker with him to St Mirren when he became Buddies manager. Walker left with a record of 92+9 games and 21 goals for Albion. After a couple of years with St Mirren he was transferred to Swansea City where he remains to this day.

Keith has missed the last year through injury but he is still the club captain – the fans at the Vetch Field worship the ground he walks on, particularly after a spectacular winner against local rivals Cardiff a few years ago. He has a Testimonial Year in 2000, and is planning a future by training to be a driving instructor.
