Superheroes Number 1 - Tom Ferguson

Without Tom Ferguson there would have been no Stirling Albion. The local area coal merchant was the driving force behind the establishment of the new club in the 1945. Early meetings to set up Stirling Albion took place in his coal merchant’s yard in Wallace Street, where Tesco now stands.

Tom had been Secretary Manager of King’s Park prior to World War Two, but it was little surprise when they were not reformed after the end of the hostilities. They had been beset by debts, and when a German bomber destroyed their ground there was to be no return for them.

Tom ran Stirling Albion virtually single-handed from 1945 through until the late 1950’s. He was manager, Secretary, Chairman, Scout, P.R. man – you name it – Tom did it. He devoted enormous energies and not insignificant sums of money to establish Stirling Albion as a top division football club just 4 years after they were formed, and was skilled at gaining maximum publicity out of nothing.

It was only in the late 1950’s with the appointment of team managers that Tom began to take more of a back seat, although he remained on the Board of Directors until his death in 1967.

Many people felt that Stirling Albion’s new ground should have been called
Fergusson Park to honour the club’s founder. Or one of the stands should have been named after him to recognise his enormous contribution to football in the town.
