Season Review

The programme issued on the August 26th 1978 has some significance for the present programme editor - it was the first Albion programme that he produced...The League Cup produced a dire 5-1 aggregate defeat from Alloa...Stuart Heggie's brilliant winner against Dundee at Annfield during October...The brief appearance of Kevin Low in an Albion jersey - a graffiti artist daubed his name in in giant painted letters on the boundary wall at Annfield and it was still visible when the ground was demolished in 1993...a depressing 0-5 defeat at Kilmarnock when we seldom got across the halfway line...Losing 1-5 at home to St Johnstone with Mickey Lawson scoring a hat trick for the Saintees...Dreadful pre-season friendly games against Hartlepool United and Port Vale...A 5-2 midweek defeat at New Kilbowie Park against Clydebank...Wins at Raith Rovers and Dumbarton in unexpected circumstances...Best result was a 4-1 home success over Queen of the South...

The winter was so bad that Albion did not play a single league game at Annfield during January or February. Only 2 away games survived the freeze - at Arbroath and at Ayr...This led to an end of season fixture pile-up which saw Albion play midweek matches in front of tiny crowds at Queen of the South and Dumbarton in the month of May...Results were generally uninspiring, notably a home defeat at the hands of Montrose. Albion were starting to find scoring a real problem. With just 43 goals from 39 league games...The reserves won the championship of the Reserve League East, and also reached the Semi Finals of the Reserve League Cup, losing to Clydebank over two legs...Llyold Irvine made his debut towards the end of the season and looked to be a very useful addition to the midfield...Partick included Scotland goalie Allan Rough in their team for the Scottish Cup tie at Annfield - they won 2-0...
