Season Review

1970/71 was not a good year for Stirling Albion F.C. Frank Joyner was the Manager at the start of the season and things looked quite promising for a spell. However, there was a real lack of consistency and by the early winter it was clear that we had no chance of promotion. Joyner was sacked; Walter Roy took over on a temporary basis; but from March the new manager was Bob Shankly. Shanks has a superb pedigree in the game and deserves greater recognition than he got. He always operated in the shadow of his better-known brother at Liverpool. It is often forgotten that Bob led Dundee to the Scottish title in 1962, and then to the semi-final of the European Cup, defeating Cologne, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht along the way. No Vetra Vilnius of Viktoria Zizkov amongst that lot.

It was under Walter Roy that Albion enjoyed their best result of the season and one of their finest ever. Motherwell cam to Annfield for a Scottish Cup tie as the up and coming team of Scottish Football. They left with their tail firmly between their legs following a 3-1 defeat.

Top scorer that season was Gus McMillan with 12 goals, closely followed by Mattie McPhee on 11. Sammy Henderson was an ever present in the Albion line up with McPhee and goalkeeper George Young missing just one competitive game each.
