Season Review

Season 1969/70 started with Willie McFarlane in charge at Annfield but after only a couple of months he was "poached" by Hibernian. Frank Joyner was appointed as his replacement. McFarlane had been instrumental in bringing through some younger players at the club and one of them followed him to Easter Road. Ironically, Albion were unsure what to do with Erich Schaedler at the time. He had talent but, for whatever reason, the club were considering releasing him when Hibs came in with an offer for him. We accepted and he went on to become a Scotland internationalist. He was, of course, to die in tragic circumstances in the mid 1980s.

Top scorer for the club this season was Joe Hughes with 27 goals. Joe was one of the "traditional" centre forwards who competed for everything and seemed to enjoy his jousts with opposing goalkeepers.

Top crowd was 4692 for the New Year Derby with Falkirk at Annfield. The Bairns won 3-0, avenging Albion's 3-0 win at Brockville from earlier that season. Falkirk were promoted as Champions with Cowdenbeath joining them. Those two met in a late season double-header that attracted crowds of 10,000 plus at both Central Park and Brockville.
